      Introduction to Piva lake

      Lake Piva (Pivsko jezero) is the largest lake lying entirely within Montenegro, in Plužine Municipality in the country's northwest, at 43°09′N 18°51′E. It is a reservoir, formed in 1975 by the Mratinje Dam on the Piva River. The lake runs up to 45 km long but only 0.7 km at its widest, covering 12.5 km², reaching 188 metres deep, with its surface at 675 metres elevation. The surrounding Piva Regional Nature Park was declared on 22 April 2015 — Montenegro's first regional park. It takes in Piva Mountain plus Bioč (2,397 m at Veliki Vitao), Maglić (2,386 m) and Volujak (2,336 m). The Piva Canyon, cut through these mountains, runs about 33 km and drops around 1,200 metres. The single lakeside town is Plužine. The Piva Monastery, built 1573–1586, was dismantled and rebuilt 3.5 km away between 1970 and 1982, along with 1,260 square metres of frescoes, to clear the reservoir basin.

      The lake is the centrepiece: 45 km long, no more than 0.7 km wide, 12.5 km² of surface at 675 metres, reaching 188 metres deep. At its north end stands the Mratinje Dam, a double-curvature concrete arch 220 metres high and 268 metres long, with a crest just 4.5 metres wide widening to 45 metres at the base. It holds back 880 million cubic metres of water and drives a power station of three 120 MW turbines — 360 MW in total, owned by Elektroprivreda Crne Gore. Building it took 820,000 cubic metres of concrete and 5,000 tonnes of steel. Above the water the Piva Canyon runs about 33 km and drops roughly 1,200 metres, cut through Maglić, Volujak and Piva mountain. The Piva Monastery, 8 km from Plužine, is the cultural anchor: an Orthodox church built 1573–1586 and moved here between 1970 and 1982.

      The Piva Regional Park takes in four mountains above 2,300 metres — Bioč, with its high point Veliki Vitao at 2,397 metres, Maglić at 2,386 metres, Volujak at 2,336 metres, and Piva Mountain itself — with well-preserved forests of white and black pine, beech, fir and maple on their lower slopes. The nearby Vojnik range reaches 1,998 metres. The canyon road linking the lake to Durmitor National Park, cut through dozens of small tunnels, gives a spine for cycling, though it carries traffic. We have not recorded our own walking or riding routes on the lake here yet. Anyone planning to walk the higher peaks should treat them as serious mountain terrain and check conditions locally before setting out.

      Plužine is the only settlement on the lake. From Nikšić it is about 57 km by road, roughly 1 hour 6 minutes to drive. From Žabljak, the gateway to Durmitor, it is about 31 miles (30.6 km by road), around 51 minutes. The Piva Canyon Road connects the lake directly to Durmitor National Park through its many rock-cut tunnels, which is the scenic approach. By public transport, a bus runs from Nikšić railway station to Plužine via Šćepan-Polje in around 4 hours 30 minutes. The nearest airports are Podgorica (TGD) and Tivat (TIV); Tivat sits about 84 km from Podgorica Airport. A car gives by far the most freedom for reaching the dam, the monastery and the canyon viewpoints, which are spread along the lake's length.

      Lake Piva is open-access. We found no government-set entry fee and no gated opening season for the lake or the Piva Regional Nature Park for 2026 — the shoreline and canyon road can be visited freely year-round, weather permitting. Paid activities run in summer: boat tours from Plužine are listed from about US $23 for summer 2026, with cruise and kayak trips operating on the 45-km lake through the warmer months. At 675 metres, with peaks above 2,300 metres feeding cold air and snow into the basin, the reliable window for boating and mountain walking is late spring to early autumn. The canyon road can be affected by winter conditions.
