Between them sit UNESCO-listed medieval monasteries, a 25 m waterfall on the White Drin, and Europe's longest Via Ferrata. Pristina airport puts all of it within 90 km.

Introduction to Kosovo
Kosovo's two national parks were both re-established on 13 December 2012 under the Ministry of Environment. Bjeshkët e Nemuna (the Accursed Mountains, or Prokletije) covers 63,028 hectares across the districts of Gjakovë and Pejë in the west, extending roughly 26 km east–west and 50 km north–south, with 115 named mountains topped by Gjeravica at 2,656 m. It is an IUCN Category II park and a BirdLife International important bird area. Sharr Mountains National Park, first declared in 1986, covers 53,272 hectares in the south around Prizren, with 145 named peaks including Golema Rudoka at 2,660 m. Both border neighbouring countries: Bjeshkët e Nemuna reaches the Montenegro and Albania frontiers, while the Sharr range continues into Albania and North Macedonia. Near Peja, the Patriarchate of Peć monastery, dating to the 13th century, was inscribed by UNESCO in 2004. Rugova Canyon has been a protected natural monument since 1985.

What there is to see
Bjeshkët e Nemuna holds 115 named mountains and numerous glacial lakes. Gjeravica Lake sits at about 2,200 m, covers 2 hectares and reaches 3.8 m deep, feeding the 51 km Erenik river. Tropojë Lake, oval and 100 m long, lies just 180 m from the Albanian border. Rugova Canyon, 2 km west of Peja, runs 25 km and drops up to 1,000 m, formed by water erosion and the retreat of the Peja glacier. The White Drin Waterfall near Radac, 11 km from Peja, falls 25 m within an 89.94-hectare protected zone. In the south, the Sharr park's glacial lakes include Jazhincë (surface 8,500 m², 12 m deep, at 2,180 m) beneath Peskovi at 2,651 m, and Shutman near Dragash at 2,070 m. The Patriarchate of Peć monastery dates to the 13th century.

Both parks are open-access mountain areas with peaks and lakes reachable on foot: Gjeravica at 2,656 m is a demanding day above Gjeravica Lake, while the Sharr range offers 145 named summits and high glacial lakes on either side of Prizren. Rugova Canyon holds the Balkans' first Via Ferrata, the "Iron Trail"; admission to the canyon is free, though some climbing routes require booking. Getting there and moving around
Pristina International Airport "Adem Jashari" lies 10 km from Pristina, 70 km from Peja and 75 km from Prizren. For the Accursed Mountains, base yourself in Peja: 33 daily buses run from Pristina, covering about 82.5 km in roughly 82 minutes for €5. Direct airport-to-Peja services take 2 h 20 min for around €8 across five daily departures; by car it is about 80 km and 1 hr 15 min, with no direct airport bus. For the Sharr park, base in Prizren, 75 km south of the airport, about 1 hour by car; a taxi from the airport takes around 49 min. Brezovica sits 90 km south of Pristina, about 1.5 hours via the R6 highway. Rugova Canyon is about 1.5 hours from Pristina, then up route M-9 from Peja.

Fees, seasons and when to come
Both national parks function as open-access mountain areas; no official 2026 entrance-fee schedule or fixed opening season was published in the research sources. Rugova Canyon admission is free, though certain climbing routes must be booked. The Sharr park is reached from Prizren by local transport or taxi, with entrance fees described as low. The Sharr range has an alpine climate with continental influence: mean monthly temperatures run from −1.3 °C in January to 20 °C in July, with annual precipitation of 600–1,200 mm depending on elevation. High lakes and summits above 2,000 m are best attempted in summer once snow clears. Brezovica records 128 snowfall days, marking a long winter at altitude.
