        Introduction to Moraca Canyon

        Morača Canyon separates the Moračke mountain range from Sinjajevina, cut by the Morača River over its 99.5 km course from a source below Mount Rzača in Kolašin Municipality to Lake Skadar; the drainage basin covers 3,257 km². It carries no protected-area status — no national or nature park, no entry fee, no permits — which distinguishes it from the neighbouring Tara Canyon and Durmitor. The Platije section averages 1,000 m deep, with the upper Gornja Morača running between 465 m and 973 m in altitude. The Crkvina saddle marks the watershed: water on the southern side drains to the Adriatic, the northeastern side flows via the Tara, Drina, Sava and Danube to the Black Sea. Morača Monastery, founded in 1252 by Stefan Vukanović Nemanjić, sits above the river about 30 km north of Podgorica. The canyon corridor is the historic route from the coast through Podgorica to northern Montenegro and on to Serbia.

        The centrepiece is the Platije Canyon, 1,000 m deep on average, with the old two-lane road pressed against the rock. Morača Monastery, founded in 1252 by Stefan Vukanović Nemanjić, sits above the river roughly 30 km north of Podgorica; the complex holds the Church of the Assumption (Uspenja Bogorodice), the small St Nicholas church dating from 1635 with frescoes by Kyr Kozma, and sleeping quarters. Frescoes in the main church are mostly 16th- and 17th-century work by Georgije Mitrofanović. Several viewing platforms sit along the route, on the river and on the bridge. The flanking peaks give the scale: Kapa Moračka rises to Lastva at 2,226 m, with Zagradac (2,217 m) and Štit (2,151 m); Maganik's Medjedji Vrh reaches 2,139 m, and Jablanov Vrh on the Sinjajevina side stands at 2,203 m. Two glacial lakes, Kapetanovo Jezero and Manito Jezero, lie on the Moračke Planine flank.

        The named walking objective is the Mrtvica Canyon, the Morača's right tributary, 8 km long and reached from a point about 35 km from Kolašin in the direction of Podgorica. A narrow sandy path runs through it, with banks rising more than 1,100 m in places. Partway sits the Danilov Most, an old stone bridge built on the Mrtvica near Zeleni Vir by Knjaz Danilo II Petrović as a memorial to his mother. SummitPost records no fees and no permits for entering the surrounding Moračke Planine, which the canyon itself shares — it is unprotected land rather than a ticketed park. The higher summits (Lastva 2,226 m, Stožac 2,141 m) are serious mountain days from the canyon floor rather than casual walks.

        The canyon is the corridor for the M-2 highway (routes E-65/E-80) between the coast, Podgorica and northern Montenegro toward Serbia. Since July 2022 the A-1 motorway offers a fast alternative: 41 km from Smokovac near Podgorica to Mateševo near Kolašin, car toll €3.50. Road distance Podgorica to Kolašin is roughly 57–69 km, about 49 minutes to 1 hour 11 minutes depending on the route. A direct bus runs from Podgorica bus station to Kolašin five times daily, taking about 1h 20m. A direct train runs three times a day between Podgorica and Kolašin, about 1h 32m. Nearest airport is Podgorica (TGD), 43 m elevation, roughly 42.6 miles (about 69 km) by road from Kolašin; it handled 1,751,750 passengers in 2025. Note the canyon road's history: a bus crashed near the monastery on 23 June 2013, 19 killed, caused by speed in a rainstorm.

        The canyon carries no entry fee and needs no permit; it is not a protected area and no seasonal calendar is published. The only charge found is at Morača Monastery, an active site open year-round in daylight. Entry to the grounds and main church is generally free with donations appreciated, though a €3.00 charge is reported at the Dormition (Assumption) church. The monastery museum keeps more restricted hours, roughly 09:00–17:00 with a lunch closure 13:00–14:00, entry free. Because the canyon doubles as a through-road, timing is about conditions rather than opening hours: the old road is narrow and winding, and the 2013 crash near the monastery underlines the risk of speed in wet weather. Late spring through autumn suits the Mrtvica path and the higher summits; winter shifts attention to the parallel road toward Kolašin's ski terrain.
