Walking, hiking and cycling holidays in Canyon Nevidio, designed and led by local guides. Nevidio is the narrowest, southernmost section of the Komarnica river canyon, cut into the southern slopes of Durmitor. Between walls that rise 350–400 metres, the passage narrows to a metre in places, with mandatory 3–5 metre jumps and stretches passable only with alpine equipment. It was first traversed in August 1965 by a Nikšić mountaineering club, which is why it carries the name "never seen". The journey earns you a route no casual walker can reach: guided, technical, and short in a way that concentrates everything.

    Introduction to Canyon Nevidio

    Nevidio sits within Durmitor National Park, established in 1952 and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1980, extended in 2005. The national park covers 39,000 hectares across the Durmitor massif and the canyons of the Tara, Draga, Sušica and Komarnica rivers; the World Heritage property spans 33,895 hectares. The canyon lies in the territory of Nikšić and Šavnik municipalities, at the foot of Durmitor near Dobri Do, about 55 km from Nikšić and 50 km from Žabljak. Sources give its length variously between 1.7 and 3.8 km; the entrance sits at 935 m, the exit at 810 m. Walls reach 350–400 m high, the floor drops to 25 m in the deepest slots, and the gorge closes to roughly one metre at its tightest. The first attempt came in 1957 from a Belgrade group and failed; the 1965 traverse, by eight mountaineers and three cameramen, took two days and a night spent on the cliffs.

    The canyon runs from an entrance at 935 m down to an exit at 810 m, a drop of roughly 125 m over a length reported between 1.7 and 3.8 km depending on the source. The scale that matters underfoot is the width: at points the walls close to about one metre, forcing progress through waterfalls, whirlpools and narrow passages. Two distinct measurements describe its depth — the gorge floor sits up to 25 m below the rim in the deepest slots, while the cliffs themselves rise 350–400 m above the water. The Komarnica carved all of this into the southern flank of the Durmitor massif, whose plateau of Jezerska Površ sits near 1,500 m and carries 48 peaks over 2,000 m. Above the canyon stand Bobotov Kuk at 2,523 m, Bezimeni Vrh at 2,487 m and Šljeme at 2,455 m.

    Nevidio is not a walking route — it is a technical canyoning descent involving swimming, mandatory jumps of 3–5 metres, and sections passable only with alpine equipment. Attempting it without a guide is strongly discouraged. The start of the canyon, with its swimming pools, can be reached on foot without a guide, but deeper progress requires expertise and a long climb back to the beginning. The canyoning itself takes around 2.5 to 3 hours; the full day, including transfer, runs about 7 hours, and the adventure can span 4 to 8 hours depending on group pace and water level.     The nearest airport is Podgorica (TGD), about 68 km from Šavnik and roughly a two-hour drive. By road, Podgorica to Žabljak runs 139 km via Nikšić (55 km) and Šavnik (47 km, then 37 km to Žabljak); Nikšić to Žabljak is 72 km through Šavnik. From Šavnik, take the main road towards Žabljak, then turn left at the signs for the Jatak/Nevidio restaurant and follow a narrow mountain road to a large gravel car park marked "Kanjon Nevidio" on the left. Guided groups typically gather at the Jatak parking lot around 10:30–11:00. Buses serve Žabljak, the gateway town at 1,456 m, from Belgrade, Podgorica, Nikšić and Pljevlja, but the final approach to the canyon car park is by car.

    Fees, season and when to come

    The canyoning season runs from late June to late September and depends on water conditions — the river must drop enough to make the narrows safe. No fixed park gate fee is documented for the canyon itself; access is guided, and the car park is paid only for campers. A published all-inclusive guided price of €130 covers gear, guides, transfer and lunch, though prices vary by operator. Come prepared for cold water and full immersion regardless of the air temperature, and book ahead: this is a small-group, weather-dependent descent, not a walk-up attraction. Early and late in the season the water is higher and colder, so mid-summer generally offers the most reliable conditions.
