The Virpazar E-Bike Loop for a Rest Day: 90 Minutes, One Climb, Three Viewpoints Over Skadar
ByThe 3E Travel team · · 7 min read

Our easy 90-minute e-bike loop from Virpazar toward Godinje: 5 km each way, one 90 m hill honestly described, and the lake views worth stopping for.
You want to move, not suffer. You've had a big day somewhere else and you'd like an hour and a half on a bike, a couple of places to stop, and a lake in front of you. This is the loop we send guests on from Virpazar when that's the brief.
It runs toward the wine village of Godinje and back. Around 5 km each way, one real climb of about 90 m between the villages, and a short detour up to Besac Fortress above town if your legs want it. On an e-bike you can do the whole thing in roughly 90 minutes, stops included. On a regular bike, call it two hours with a bit of breathing on the hill.
The route, in plain numbers
Virpazar itself is tiny — population 277, a single road, a bridge and a pedestrian zone you can walk end to end in ten minutes. You leave town on the lake road heading east and south toward Godinje. The valley floor is flat and easy. The one hill sits between Virpazar and Godinje: about 90 m of climbing on a paved road. On an e-bike in a middle assist setting, it's three or four minutes of steady work. On an unassisted bike, it's a genuine, if short, grind.
Godinje is 5 km from Virpazar: roughly 25–30 minutes by bike, 10 by car, an hour on foot. The village is built in stone, with covered passages between the houses and vines growing over everything. Winery Garnet here has been run by the same family for 14 generations — a fair place to turn around, drink water, and taste the local Vranac red if you're not riding straight back.
For the return, retrace the same road. It's downhill back toward Virpazar, which is the reward for the climb out. If you want a slightly longer version, the signed Virpazar–Crmničko Polje loop is 17.5 km with 260 m of climbing, mostly asphalt with about 300 m of gravel, and it's open all year. That's a solid half-day, not a rest day.
Three places to stop and look
Besac Fortress sits immediately above Virpazar. It's a short, steep spur off the start of the ride — park the bike and walk the last bit. Half an hour inside is plenty. From the walls you get the whole Crmnica basin and the lake spread below. Entry has been reported at both €1 and €2.50 for adults in recent seasons, children free; hours are listed as 10:00–18:00 by one source and 09:00–21:00 by another. Check the sign at the gate rather than trusting any single website.
The second viewpoint is the climb itself — the top of the hill between Virpazar and Godinje opens out over the reed beds and the southern arm of the lake. It's the natural place to stop and let the e-bike's motor cool while you drink something.
The third is Godinje, looking back the way you came. Lake Skadar is the largest lake in the Balkans and holds around 280 bird species; in spring and early autumn you'll hear far more than you see from the saddle.
Where to actually get an e-bike
This is the part the other articles don't tell you honestly. Walk-up bike rental in Virpazar has become unreliable. Through 2025, visitors reported that the main town provider had closed and no one had replaced it — one traveller couldn't source a bike anywhere, including at the tourist office. The historical provider to try is Outdoor & More, based at Café Virparis. Don't build your day around it being open.
The dependable route to an e-bike here is through an operator or guesthouse that holds its own fleet. We run a guided Lake Skadar e-bike tour from Virpazar with bikes, helmets, navigation and a return transfer included. [3E TO CONFIRM: whether 3E offers a short rest-day e-bike rental or half-day loop separate from the full wine tour, and its 2026 price].
Virpazar e-bike options by effort (2026)
| Option | Distance | Climb | Time on e-bike | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Virpazar–Godinje out-and-back | ~10 km | ~90 m | ~90 min with stops | A proper rest day |
| Virpazar–Crmničko Polje loop (signed) | 17.5 km | 260 m | ~2–2.5 hrs | Half a day, still easy-ish |
| Virpazar–Ckla cycle path (full) | 41.3 km | varies | Half to full day | Keen riders, not resting |
| Pavlova Strana by bike | ~16 km return | steep, 680 m top | Half day, hard | Very fit riders only |
Getting to Virpazar and when to come
From Podgorica, the train is the easy answer: around 31 minutes, roughly every three hours daily, tickets from about €1–5. Virpazar's station is a short walk from the bridge. By car it's off the Podgorica–coast highway with parking in town. Buses stop here too.
Ride in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October). July and August get genuinely hot on exposed road, and the shade is thin between villages. The season for riding stretches into November most years. One note if you're tempted by the lake-field trails: some flood in winter when the water rises, though the Virpazar–Crmničko Polje loop stays open year-round.
Do I need to pay the Lake Skadar National Park €5 fee for a land-only bike ride?
The €5 per person daily fee is mainly triggered by going out on the water — boat trips and the like. For a land-only ride it's often not required, but the rule is applied loosely and locally. Bring €5 cash anyway; most park booths and boat captains don't take cards.
How hard is the single hill to Godinje, really?
About 90 m of climbing on a paved road between the two villages. On an e-bike in a middle assist setting it's three to four minutes of easy pedalling. On a regular bike it's a short genuine effort — most reasonably fit people manage it without stopping, but it's the one bit that earns the word 'climb'.
Can I rent an e-bike on arrival in Virpazar without booking ahead?
Don't count on it. Walk-up rental in town has been unreliable since the main provider closed, and 2025 visitors reported being unable to find any bike. Book through an operator or guesthouse with its own fleet so a bike is waiting for you.
Is this loop suitable for someone who hasn't cycled in years?
Yes, on an e-bike. The valley floor is flat, the one hill is short, and the return is downhill. The only skill it asks is being comfortable sharing a quiet road with the occasional car near the villages.
Ride out before 10am in summer, turn around at Godinje with a glass of water or Vranac, and you're back on Virpazar's bridge by late morning with the afternoon still yours. That's the whole point of a rest-day loop: enough to feel the lake, not enough to need another rest day after it.
